El Santuario de Chimayó, often called the "Lourdes of America," is a National Historic Landmark located in the village of Chimayó, New Mexico, about 25 miles north of Santa Fe along the High Road to Taos. Built primarily of adobe in 1816, the church is a well-preserved example of Spanish Colonial architecture and attracts nearly 300,000 visitors each year. The mission is famous for its holy dirt, believed by many to have healing properties, and for its role as a center of Catholic pilgrimage in the United States
